acanthus-tapestry-stof-morris-co
Acanthus Tapestry fabric

Acanthus Tapestry fabric with curling acanthus leaves

Acanthus Tapestry fabric shows large acanthus leaves curling in S-shaped scrolls, weaving over and under one another. A single leaf is roughly the size of your forearm. Fine hatching renders the veins and shadows, and this visible weave gives the foliage its depth, as if you were looking into a dense canopy of leaves. A dark ground with small tendrils and tiny flowers glimmers through between the leaves. The repeating pattern has the look of a Gobelin tapestry: rich in texture and warm to the touch.

Colours of Acanthus Tapestry fabric

This Morris & Co fabric comes in three colourways. Indigo/Mineral places gray-blue and slate-blue leaves on a dark navy ground. Scrolls in sage green and sand beige run through the design as lighter bands. Grape/Heather is deeper and warmer, with purple, aubergine, wine red and mauve against a black ground, interspersed with olive green and beige. Blue brings calm to a light room, while the purple version gives a space weight and glow. The third colourway is called Forest/Hemp.

Acanthus Tapestry fabric by Morris & Co on sofa and armchair

In the lifestyle photo, the fabric upholsters a sofa in a library with wooden panelling and well-stocked bookcases. Several pattern repeats fit across the backrest, so the scrolls continue over the seat and armrest. Brass, dark wood and a reddish-beige rug bring out the warm tones, while a green buttoned pouffe gives the eye a place to rest. Even a purple velvet armchair with a different leaf motif looks good alongside it.
