Morris & Co wallpaper dates back to 1862, when William Morris drew his very first design, Trellis: a rose pattern he based on the climbing roses in his own garden. More than a century and a half later, those same designs are still being produced. Choosing wallpaper from Morris & Co means bringing a piece of British design history into your home: winding branches, stylised flowers and rich, understated colours that make every pattern recognisable at a single glance.
Morris & Co wallpaper and the Arts and Crafts movement
William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the founders of the British Arts and Crafts movement. In 1861 he established the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. together with six partners; from 1875 onwards the company continued as Morris & Co. The designs emerged as a deliberate response to industrial mass production, driven by the conviction that everything in the home should be both beautiful and useful. Morris ultimately created fifty different wallpaper designs, printed with woodblocks using a separate block for each colour. That craft-based approach explains why Morris & Co wallpaper still possesses such exceptional depth and refinement.
Materials and look of Morris & Co wallpaper
Almost all of the patterns are rooted in nature, and specifically in the native flowers and plants of Great Britain. No exotic, imported blossoms, but the daisies, willow branches and ivy of English gardens and hedgerows. That familiarity gives Morris & Co wallpaper a warm, reassuring character. Modern wallpaper from Morris & Co is produced in robust, easy-to-maintain qualities with a matte, velvety finish that comes close to the original block printing. The result looks artisanal and at the same time practical in everyday use.
Signature collections of Morris & Co wallpaper
The range draws time and again on the rich archive of nineteenth-century designs, each one reinterpreted in contemporary colourways. A selection from the Morris & Co wallpaper collections we carry:
- The Unfinished Works — recently released collection with fresh interpretations of classic motifs.
- Archive Wallpapers IV – The Collector — a profound tribute to the archive, full of historical richness.
- Morris & Friends — designs inspired by the circle of artists around the brand.
- Cornubia — lush botanical patterns with a warm, rural character.
- Bedford Park — subtle, atmospheric designs that nod to British garden culture.
- Pure Morris North — timeless patterns in a calmer, understated colour palette.
Morris & Co wallpaper in your interior
A common misconception is that this wallpaper only suits a classically furnished home. The opposite is true. The rich patterns actually work surprisingly well as a contrast in a modern or Scandinavian interior: a single accent wall beside crisp white walls instantly gives a room soul and depth. In the bedroom, the calm, organic motifs create a serene atmosphere, while a lively design in the hallway or living room makes an immediate impression. If you want to coordinate wall and textile, take a look at the Morris & Co fabrics as well, which connect seamlessly to the wallpaper collections. Unsure how a pattern will look in your space? With our Room Visualizer you can view the wallpaper directly on your own wall before you order.
Hanging and maintaining Morris & Co wallpaper
The designs from Morris & Co often have a large pattern repeat, with the motif running across several drops. So work carefully and allow for pattern loss when ordering. Would you rather be certain first? Then request a sample, so you can see in your own light how Morris & Co wallpaper really looks. Once you know which design you want, use the wallpaper calculator to work out exactly how many rolls you need. With a large repeat or embossed wallpaper, it is wise to call in a professional paperhanger for a flawless result.
