Wallpaper Pattern Repeat Explained: What Do Straight Match, Half Drop Match and Free Match Mean?
Straight Match, Half Drop Match, Free Match or Pattern Repeat: what do these terms mean and how much wallpaper do you need? We explain how pattern repeat works and what to look out for before ordering.
What is pattern repeat in wallpaper?
Almost every patterned wallpaper consists of a design that repeats itself continuously. The distance between two identical points in the pattern is called the pattern repeat, also known as the rapport.
The way that pattern returns on the next strip determines how the strips need to be hung next to each other.
Pattern Repeat and Pattern Match: what's the difference?
The Pattern Repeat indicates after how many centimeters the design repeats itself vertically. For example, if there's a pattern repeat of 64 cm, the same point in the design returns every 64 cm.
The Pattern Match then tells you how two strips align next to each other. With Straight Match this happens at the same height, with Half Drop the next strip is offset, and with Free Match the design doesn't need to be aligned.
You need both pieces of information to cut the wallpaper correctly and calculate the required quantity.
This information is particularly important for:
- calculating the number of rolls;
- cutting the strips;
- minimizing cutting waste;
- a perfectly continuous pattern on the wall.
On the label of every roll

Always check the label of every roll upon delivery. In addition to the product and batch information, this shows symbols indicating how the pattern should be matched between strips. This tells you whether the wallpaper has a Free Match, Straight Match or Half Drop Match.

This information is important for determining strip length, aligning the design and the amount of cutting waste.
Also check that all rolls have the same article, color and batch number. Rolls from different production batches may show small color differences that become visible on a complete wall. Therefore, keep all labels until the wallpaper has been fully checked and installed.
The larger the pattern rapport, the more cutting waste usually occurs. This may mean extra rolls are sometimes needed.
Which pattern repeats exist?
Almost all wallpaper types fall into one of these three categories:
- Straight Match
- Half Drop Match
- Free Match (Random Match)

Straight Match explained
What does Straight Match mean?
With a Straight Match, the design of each strip connects at the same horizontal height to the strip next to it. If the wallpaper has a pattern rapport of 64 cm, for example, the same point in the design returns every 64 cm. When cutting the strips, you take this rapport into account so that the pattern runs neatly across the entire wall.
Straight Match is a common pattern alignment and relatively easy to match.
When do you see Straight Match? Often with:
- geometric designs
- stripes
- tile patterns
- classic ornaments
- botanical prints with a symmetrical design
A Straight Match is generally easy to install for an experienced DIYer, because each strip connects at the same horizontal pattern height.
Half Drop Match explained
What does Half Drop Match mean?
With a Half Drop Match, each subsequent strip is offset by half a pattern height.
The pattern therefore runs diagonally across the wall. This often creates a more natural, richer and less repetitive look. This means each subsequent strip must be cut differently from the previous one. This uses slightly more material but often delivers a much more beautiful end result.
Example: a Half Drop of 64/32 cm
If you see 64/32 cm in the specifications, for example, this usually means that the complete design repeats after 64 cm and that the alignment with the next strip is offset by 32 cm. With a classic Half Drop, this offset is half of the complete pattern rapport.
The strips therefore alternate: strip 1 and strip 3 start from the same pattern position, while strip 2 and strip 4 start from the offset position. Therefore, always lay out cut strips in order before you start hanging.
How does Half Drop Match create a more beautiful result?
With a Half Drop Match, each subsequent strip is offset by half a pattern height. This means the design doesn't return at exactly the same horizontal line each time. Especially with large floral prints, landscapes and organic patterns, this creates a more natural and balanced whole. The repetition is less noticeable, the pattern looks calmer and the wall gains more depth and movement.
Don't be put off by Half Drop Match. A professional wallpaper hanger works with this daily and experienced DIYers can also handle it perfectly with good preparation.
What is Free Match?
With Free Match, you don't need to take the pattern into account at all. You can place each strip directly next to the previous one without aligning the design.
This is common with:
- linen textures
- plain wallpaper
- concrete look
- plaster or lime textures
- some textile wallpaper types
Free Match doesn't mean the wallpaper has no pattern. It only means that the strips don't need to align at a specific height.
What does Reverse Hang mean?
With some wall coverings, every second strip is applied rotated 180 degrees. This is called Reverse Hang or Reverse Hanging. It may be prescribed, for example, with certain plains and texture qualities to achieve the most uniform wall appearance possible.
Reverse Hang is not a pattern repeat like Straight Match, Half Drop Match or Free Match, but an installation instruction. Therefore, always check the technical information of the specific wallpaper before you start.
Does pattern repeat affect the number of rolls?
Yes.
The larger the pattern rapport, the greater the chance you'll need extra material to make the strips align properly.
A Half Drop Match with a large rapport usually requires more wallpaper than a Straight Match with a small pattern.
Example: Suppose your wall is 250 cm high and the wallpaper has a pattern rapport of 64 cm. You can't automatically cut a strip at exactly 250 cm. You need extra length to make the design align correctly on the next strip, in addition to the required cutting margin top and bottom. That's why patterned wallpaper can require more material than you'd expect based on square meters alone.
How much cutting waste actually occurs depends on the combination of wall height, roll length, pattern rapport and match type. A large pattern rapport doesn't automatically mean you need a complete extra roll.
That's why our calculations always take into account:
- wall height;
- pattern rapport;
- match type;
- number of walls;
- windows and doors.
Selected tip: Use our Wallpaper Calculator to calculate the required quantity. The pattern repeat and match type can affect the number of rolls you need.
Where do you find the pattern information?
On every product page you'll find the technical specifications of the wallpaper.
This includes:
Pattern Repeat | The vertical distance after which the design repeats
Pattern Match | The way two strips align with each other
Roll width | The width of the roll
Roll length | The length of the roll
This information is important for both the wallpaper hanger and for calculating the required quantity.
How does pattern repeat work with panoramic and custom wallpaper?
With custom wallpaper and some panoramic designs, the pattern structure works differently than with traditional roll wallpaper. The design is distributed across the wall as one large composition. The individual strips together form the complete image and therefore don't always have a traditional repeating pattern rapport.
The strips are applied in a fixed order. Therefore, always follow the supplied strip plan and the numbering of the strips. This way the design comes together on the wall exactly as it was designed.
Common mistake
Many people think that all rolls can simply be hung next to each other. That's only true for Free Match.
With patterned designs, each strip must be carefully aligned. If you don't do this, a visible break in the pattern immediately occurs that can't be corrected later.
Selected Tip: Always check first how the pattern continues on the next strip before cutting. This prevents unnecessary material waste.
Another common mistake is to cut all strips in advance to exactly the same length and from the same point in the design. With a Half Drop Match, this doesn't work the same way as with a Straight Match. Therefore, always check the match type and pattern repeat first before cutting multiple strips.
Straight Match, Half Drop or Free Match: which is better?
None of the three is better. The match type is determined by the wallpaper's design.
Free Match is the easiest to install because the strips don't need to align at a specific pattern height. Straight Match is straightforward to align because the design continues at the same height. Half Drop Match requires slightly more attention when cutting and aligning, but ensures with many organic and large designs that the repetition is less prominently visible.
Therefore, choose wallpaper primarily because of the design you like and don't be put off by the match type.
Check this before ordering or cutting
- the Pattern Repeat;
- the Pattern Match;
- the width and length of the roll;
- the height and width of the wall;
- the required cutting margin;
- the article, color and batch number of all rolls;
- any additional installation instructions, such as Reverse Hang.
Have you checked this information? Then you can determine the required quantity more accurately and avoid many mistakes during cutting and installation.
Conclusion
Whether you choose a sleek geometric design or a rich floral pattern, understanding pattern repeat prevents surprises during wallpapering. Terms like Straight Match, Half Drop Match and Free Match may seem technical, but ultimately make the difference between a good result and a perfectly finished wall.
