Textile wallpaper is real fabric — linen, silk, wool, cotton, viscose or suede — laminated onto a backing, usually non-woven and sometimes paper. The weave stays visible and tangible, and you notice it on the wall straight away: light falls more softly instead of reflecting, the sharpest echo fades and the wall gains a depth you cannot achieve with flat vinyl. In a room with a lot of glass, stone or concrete, that difference is clearest in the evening under lamplight.

Types of textile wallpaper: from linen to suede

Which textile wallpaper you choose is partly taste, partly practicality. Linen wallpaper has an irregular, natural grain that looks calm in a living room or study. Silk wallpaper catches light with a low sheen, beautiful in a dining room or bedroom. Suede wallpaper is deeper and softer in character, strong on a single accent wall behind the bed. Cotton and viscose sit below these in price and work in a wide range of settings.

Looking for a natural look, but woven from plant fibre rather than fabric? Also consider grasscloth wallpaper and sisal wallpaper. If you want texture without real fibre, textured wallpaper offers relief with the same calming effect. You will find more options in the overview of wallpaper materials.

    Thick wallpaper: wool and felt

Those who end up with thick wallpaper are usually after warmth and calm. Wool and felt are the warmest and most sound-absorbing types of textile wallpaper; in a bedroom or reading corner in particular, that pays off.

Textile brands with a signature of their own

The name says it all at Dutch Walltextile Company: wall textiles as a craft. At the Italian Dedar and the Belgian Arte, the textile wallpaper runs from calm linen to outspoken woven designs in silk, wool and suede.

Fabric wallpaper or textile wallpaper: two names, one product

Fabric wallpaper and textile wallpaper are two names for the same product: wallpaper made of fabric, woven and glued onto a backing. Mainly after the fabric look, but is the wall in a spot where real weave is vulnerable? Then vinyl wallpaper is the practical route, as it is easier to clean. In sitting and sleeping areas, real textile wallpaper wins: there you see and feel the difference every day.

Textile wallcovering for living rooms, bedrooms and hospitality

Textile wallpaper comes into its own in rooms where you spend time: a living room, the bedroom, a reading corner. In restaurants, hotel lobbies and meeting rooms, the choice often falls on textile wallcovering because of the sound, as fabric breaks up echo. If that dampening is your main goal, also look at acoustic wallpaper, which is built specifically for it. One thing to remember: textile stains more quickly than vinyl and is harder to clean. So keep it away from the kitchen splash zone and wet rooms, and preferably not at eye level along a busy walkway.

    Hanging and ordering textile wallpaper

Order a sample first, because textile wallpaper can only truly be judged in daylight on your own wall, not on a screen. Widths typically run from 70 to 140 cm, and you can calculate the number of rolls with the wallpaper calculator. On a non-woven backing you hang it dry: paste on the wall, panel against it, which works comfortably at height. Seams are butted edge to edge, because an overlap shows immediately with textile wallpaper. Working straight and clean counts for more here than with ordinary wallpaper; if you have doubts about your wall or your hand, call in a professional wallpaper hanger. Frequently asked questions

    FAQ about Textile wallpaper
    What exactly is textile wallpaper?
Textile wallpaper is a wall covering where real fabric — such as linen, silk, wool or suede — is applied to a paper or non-woven backing. The weave structure remains visible and tangible, creating depth, warmth and a luxurious appearance. It is supplied per roll and applied like regular wallpaper, using a special textile adhesive.
Which materials are available for textile wallpaper?
The most popular materials are linen, silk, wool, cotton, viscose and suede. Linen gives a calm natural look, silk and suede are chic and luxurious, wool and felt are sound-absorbing and warm. Each material determines both the appearance and the ease of maintenance of the wall.
Is textile wallpaper difficult to apply?
Textile wallpaper is slightly more demanding than non-woven or paper wallpaper, as the fabric is more sensitive to glue stains and pulling. For a flawless result we recommend an experienced wallpaper installer. You can find a local professional via our professional wallpaper installer page, or read step-by-step instructions on our DIY wallpapering guide.
Is textile wallpaper suitable for bathrooms or kitchens?
In humid rooms such as bathrooms, we advise against textile wallpaper; the natural fibres absorb moisture. In a kitchen it can work, provided it stays away from cooking fumes and splash zones. For these rooms, vinyl or non-woven wallpaper is a better choice.
How do I maintain textile wallpaper?
Dust the wall regularly with a soft duster or vacuum with a brush attachment on low suction. Do not rub stains; gently dab them with a dry cloth. Some materials, such as vinyl-coated textile, can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth — always check the product specifications of your chosen design.
