This wallpaper actually dates from a time before wallpaper existed. These were panels of dyed leather, usually with a relief floral pattern. This was a popular, yet expensive form of decoration in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The panels were sewn together to create large-scale, decorative wall coverings. This was done in the same way as strips of wallpaper are hung side by side to create a more impressive statement.
