European Rolls vs. Double Rolls: Sizes in Inches

American wallpaper is quoted in single and double rolls; European wallpaper is sold by the roll of about 10 meters. If you are used to double rolls and square feet, this guide translates European roll sizes into inches and shows how to order the right quantity the first time.

How big is a European wallpaper roll?

Most European wallpaper comes on a roll of approximately 10 m × 53 cm. In US units, that is about 32.8 ft long and 20.9 in wide, which works out to roughly 57 square feet of coverage per roll. Some designs use wider or longer rolls; the exact dimensions are listed in the specifications on each product page.

One European roll ≈ one American double roll

In the US, wallpaper is usually priced per single roll but packaged and sold as a double roll. A single roll covers roughly 28 to 35 square feet, so a double roll gives you about 56 to 70 square feet. At around 57 square feet, a standard European roll sits squarely in double-roll territory. A simple rule of thumb: where an American pattern would call for one double roll, plan one European roll.

Format Width Length Coverage
European roll 20.9 in (53 cm) 32.8 ft (10 m) ±57 sq ft
US single roll (typical) 20.5–27 in 13.5–16.5 ft 28–35 sq ft
US double roll (typical) 20.5–27 in 27–33 ft 56–70 sq ft

Square feet to square meters

European product pages and murals often use square meters. The conversion is simple: 1 m² ≈ 10.8 sq ft. So a 100 sq ft wall is about 9.3 m², and a European roll of 5.3 m² is the familiar 57 sq ft.

Measuring your walls in inches

Measure the width and height of each wall in inches, at the widest and tallest points. On our US site, the wallpaper calculator on each product page works in inches by default: enter your wall width and height and it returns the number of rolls, including a trim margin of about 2 inches (5 cm) on all sides and the pattern repeat of that specific design. The calculator does not account for windows, doors or sloped walls. When in doubt, our team gladly checks your figures.

Pattern repeat: straight, half-drop and free match

The pattern repeat determines how much extra length each strip needs so the motif aligns from strip to strip. A straight match lines up at the same height, a half-drop shifts every other strip by half the repeat, and a free match needs no alignment at all. The calculator handles this automatically, but it helps to understand what you are ordering. Our article on pattern repeat explains all three with examples.

Murals are made to measure. Wall murals are printed to order for your exact wall dimensions, so roll arithmetic does not apply: simply enter your wall size in inches on the product page.
