The building from which this design originates was built in the mid-19th century on the site of the notorious Marshalsea prison. Of four layers of wallpaper pasted on top of each other, this is the oldest that was found. The Gothic grid pattern with Moorish influences was the first wallpaper that adorned the walls of one of the buildings constructed in the late 1870s, replacing the prison.
