Pierre Frey cushions: seven covers from a Paris weaving house

These Pierre Frey cushions come from the furnishing fabrics the Maison designs and weaves itself. The house opened in Paris in 1935 under its founder Pierre Frey, a designer who worked on furnishing fabrics, and it has operated from the rue des Petits-Champs since 1937, where the collections are still drawn up today. Patrick Frey took the artistic direction in 1969 and now shares the Maison with his sons Pierre, Vincent and Matthieu.

Jacquard, velvet and woven texture in the covers

The studio keeps an archive holding more than 25,000 documents and pulls from it for new and reissued designs. That shows in the covers: graphic jacquards, soft velvets and weaves with a natural texture you can read with your hand. Because the same studio also produces wallpaper, furniture, rugs and carpets, the covers share a design language with what goes on the wall and the floor.

The seven designs, grouped by the mood they set

Arty carries a lively, artistic drawing; Arty Franje is the same design finished with fringe. Cochiti and Louni lean on ethnic motifs in warm color. Les Feuillages carries a leaf motif, Le Chant des Dunes stays soft, and Caraibes is the colorful one in the group.

Sizing and placement on an American sofa

Deep sectionals swallow small pillows. On a seat 40 inches (101.6 cm) deep, a 22 inch (55.9 cm) square anchors the corner better than an 18 inch (45.7 cm) one, and a lumbar shape in the middle keeps the row from looking staged. Set one loud drawing against a plain weave in a color taken from inside that drawing. In a gray or oatmeal room, a single strong cover already carries the sofa.
