Dedar fabrics
Dedar fabric comes from an Italian family business that Elda and Nicola Fabrizio founded in 1976 in the silk region around Como. The name is a contraction of design d'arredamento, Italian for home furnishing, and that is the ground the house has covered ever since.
Interior designers know this Milanese house for color palettes you don't see coming and patterns with a clear point of view. On this page you find a selection of its upholstery and curtain fabrics, sent from the Netherlands to your door in the United States.
The story behind Dedar fabric
Since 1997 the company has been run by the second generation, siblings Caterina and Raffaele Fabrizio. Under their lead Dedar grew into an internationally respected name in home textiles. The collection now reaches past upholstery and drapery fabric into passementerie and wall coverings.
Production stays largely in Italian hands, at specialized weaving mills that keep the craft of the region alive. From 2011 to 2020 Dedar also produced the home textile and wallcovering collections for Hermès, a partnership that strengthened the reputation of the house.
Weaves and look of Dedar textiles
Dedar textiles start with yarn and weave. You find velvets with a soft, deep pile, voiles light enough to let daylight drift through, and sturdy cloths with a graphic figure drawn into them. Beyond weaving, the atelier embroiders, prints with metal and applies sequins, so a surface gets texture and depth before you even notice the pattern.
The mood runs from quiet and natural to loud and colorful. Many of the designs we carry sit at the calm end, with grounds in cream and ivory and touches of tan, where the interest comes from slubs, loops and flecks instead of a printed motif. From across the room they read as one warm color. Up close, the weave starts to talk.
Signature Dedar fabric designs
Below is a selection of the Dedar designs we carry. Each name links to its own page with the available colors and details.
- Vézac — thick and thin yarns with knots and small loops forming narrow horizontal bands
- Vesna — thin gold lines cross an ivory ground in an open grid that stops abruptly
- Verray Parfit Gentil Knyght — light, flat yarn blocks against darker flecked weave, like a faded checkerboard
- Untitled 1941 — staggered horizontal bands and blocks, some ending in frayed threads, with rows of short stitches
- Tal — a fine horizontal rib crossed by irregular slubs a shade lighter or darker
- Sassongher — a jacquard of overlapping vertical blocks with ragged edges, like broad brushstrokes
- Rododendro — threads in several shades cross into a coarse mottled texture with no repeat
- Pour Parler — thin branching contour lines in embroidered stitches, like veins in natural stone
Where Dedar fabric works best
Upholstered dining chairs and benches take daily wear, so they call for the denser weaves. A grainy texture like Rododendro has no repeat to match, which makes it easy to cut around a chair seat or along a long banquette.
On a sofa or a headboard, an all-over weave such as Vézac or Tal reads as one warm color from the doorway and shows its slubs once you sit down. Nothing has to line up at the seams.
Curtains and drapes are where pattern earns its place. Sassongher runs its brushstroke blocks from top to bottom, which gives a panel length, and the tall windows in many American homes let that vertical rhythm play out. A bold design at the window asks for a calm, plain upholstery fabric in a matching tone, so the room stays in balance.
In open-plan rooms with hard floors and a lot of glass, a light voile filters the daylight and softens the hard lines of the space. To tie fabric to the wall, look at the Dedar wallcovering, which carries the same signature as the cloth.
Choosing and caring for Dedar textiles
Start with the use. Each product page lists the composition and the abrasion resistance, and those two lines tell you a lot. Heavier weaves belong on seats that get used every day. Lighter ones belong at the window, where they hang instead of rub.
A sample lets you judge color and texture in your own light. Put it in the room where the fabric will go, next to the floor and the wall it has to live with, and look at it in the morning and again in the evening.
Care differs from weave to weave, so follow the label on the fabric you choose. If you are unsure which quality suits your chair, sofa or drapery, send our team a photo of the piece and we will think it through with you.
