You can recognise this instruction by the symbol on the label showing two arrows pointing in opposite directions (one up, one down). Manufacturers specify this mainly for plain and textured wallpaper: because of the production process, the colour or sheen can vary very slightly across the width of the roll. By rotating every other strip, the same edges always sit next to each other, preventing visible shading between the strips. So when cutting, mark on the back of each strip which end goes up.

Fit and seal the skirting boards first, then hang the wallpaper. You can then trim the paper cleanly along the top of the skirting and never have to run sealant over the wallpaper afterwards, with all the risk of stains or damage that brings. No. Corners are rarely 100% square. Let the seam end at least 10 cm away from the corner — for heavier materials such as acoustic or textile wallpaper at least 20 cm — this prevents the wallpaper from loosening or visibly gaping open.

Because corners are often not straight. If you start there, your strip can run crooked and visible deviations will occur. By starting at least 10 cm from the corner with a guide line — with heavier materials such as acoustic or textile wallpaper at least 20 cm — you prevent crooked strips and achieve a neat finish.

With patterned wallpaper or natural/textile wallpaper, you decide in advance how the design is distributed across the wall. This ensures that the pattern comes out nicely in visible places and does not partly disappear into a corner. For natural/textile wallpaper it is also important, so that your seams are nicely distributed across the wall. This gives a calm appearance.

Work at 18–22 °C and around 40–60% RH. Avoid draught and direct sun/heating. Close windows/doors while pasting and leave to dry for 24 hours.

With plain wallpaper without a pattern, you don't need to allow for pattern match or repeat when cutting the strips to size: you cut each strip to the room height plus a 5–10 cm margin, so you have hardly any cutting waste. Do check the symbols on the label, though: for many plain and textured wallpapers, the manufacturer instructs you to hang every other strip upside down — known as 'reverse hanging' (see the question about reverse hanging). Also, only use rolls with the same batch number (dye lot) and take the light in the room into account, so subtle differences in tone between the strips don't become visible.
