Muance wallpaper

Muance wallpaper is printed as a mural, cut to the size of the wall it goes on, which makes it a different purchase from a roll off a shelf. The brand behind it is Dutch. Designer Dennis van Zanden founded it and sums himself up as part South African dreamer, part Dutch designer; its motto, Majestic walls with nuance, sets the tone. Contemporary art is the starting point rather than a repeating pattern, and the catalog runs past five hundred designs.

Measuring the wall before you order Muance wallpaper

Because each mural is made to measure, the order starts with a tape measure instead of a roll count. Take the wall baseboard to ceiling and corner to corner and write both numbers down: something like 9 ft 2 in (2.79 m) high by 13 ft (3.96 m) wide. Measure at two or three points, since walls rarely run true, and mark where an outlet or a light switch falls so the pattern can be set to clear it. Motifs in the Muance wallpaper range

The designs are released in editions, each holding to a palette of its own. Violet and Cobalt came first, then Amber, Dusk, Lush and Ivory. Individual designs carry the same signal in their names. Paradise runs lush and nature-driven, warm rather than cool. Mystic Mingle lets organic forms run into one another until the shapes stop reading as separate. Starting from an edition is often faster than scrolling by motif.

Which finish suits the room

One Muance wallpaper design can be printed on several materials, and the choice changes the wall as much as the image does. Textile has the surface of woven cloth: it takes the edge off reflected light and gives the print depth. Vinyl sits on a non-woven backing, washes down and takes wear, which is what a kitchen or a mudroom asks of a wall. The metallic finish, in gold, silver or copper on a dimensionally stable backing, keeps shifting as the daylight moves across it. The non-woven base is PVC-free, and every material prints with low-emission, Greenguard-certified inks.

Rooms that carry a full-wall mural

A powder room is the easiest place to start with the brand's wallpapers: you take in all four walls at once, so a strong image has nowhere to trail off. An entryway works on the same logic. In a primary bedroom the wall behind the headboard is the usual candidate, and a breakfast nook can hold one wall without crowding the rest of the kitchen.
