Why custom wallpaper suits an American house

Interior walls here are mostly drywall, the flat surface a printed panel wants, and the rooms tend to be tall. A two-story entryway, the wall climbing alongside a staircase, the long side of an open plan living room: at that size a repeating pattern loses its grip and one scene holds. Since the print is scaled to your own figures, a 12 ft (3.66 m) wall is no harder to cover than an 8 ft (2.44 m) one. A powder room works the opposite way: you take it in at a glance, which is where a graphic print earns its place.

Measuring a wall before you order

You work in wall area, not rolls. Measure the widest and the tallest point, since floors and ceilings are rarely dead level, then allow 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) for trimming. Send those two numbers and we scale the design into panels that hang side by side. A standard European roll comes in one fixed width with a repeat that returns at set intervals; printing to size drops that limit, so the image starts and stops where you decided. Backings, room by room

In rooms that get wet or get touched, the backing matters as much as the picture. Our bathroom wallpaper uses water-resistant materials built for the humidity a running shower puts into a room. Vinyl is the practical pick for a kitchen wall, a mudroom or a hallway where coats and bags brush past: it wipes clean and takes a splash. Non-woven wallpaper hangs easily, since the paste goes onto the wall and not onto the print.

Picking a subject: panoramic, architectural or botanical

Panoramic murals carry a wide horizon and reward a long wall. Architecture murals use perspective to give a compact room somewhere to look. Jungle murals lay dense foliage across the surface and make a bedroom read as enclosed rather than bare. Tecnografica works in that panoramic, architectural register.
