PVC Free Wallpaper

PVC-free wallpaper is what remains once the chlorine chemistry of vinyl is taken out: a paper, non-woven or woven surface with the print sitting straight on the material. That matters most in rooms that get aired out least: a den, a primary bedroom, a home office over the garage. It also changes how a wall reads. Matte paper and woven fiber absorb daylight, where a coated vinyl film sends it back at you.

Telling PVC-free wallpaper apart from vinyl

Two layers decide it: the backing and the face. Vinyl is printed onto a plastic film, which is why it holds a faint sheen and wipes down easily. Take the film away and you are looking at the substrate itself. Non-woven wallpaper does most of the work in this selection, with cellulose and textile fibers pressed into a stable sheet that you hang by pasting the wall, not the strip. Paper wallpaper is the older route, flatter and quieter, and it shows fine engraved line work the way it was drawn.

A second group is woven rather than printed. Grasscloth sets natural stems side by side, so seams stay visible and the color shifts from panel to panel. That drift is the character of the material, not a defect. Paperweave runs tighter and more even, closer to a fine basket. Linen wallpaper gives a flat cloth grain that from across a room can pass for hand-troweled plaster.

Hanging PVC-free wallpaper on drywall

American walls are mostly drywall, and bare drywall drinks. Sand the joint compound flush, prime it, and let the primer cure before anything goes up, because unsealed board pulls water out of the paste and cuts your open time short. Non-woven takes that in stride. Paper swells a little when wet and wants a few minutes of booking first. Woven fiber asks for clean hands and a soft brush, since paste on the face tends to stay there. A powder room with no shower is fair game; for genuinely wet rooms, start in bathroom wallpaper instead.

European rolls are commonly sold at 33 ft (10.05 m) long and 20.9 in (53 cm) wide, though several brands here weave or print wider. Pattern repeat, not square footage, drives your waste, so count the wall in full drops and round up. Order all the rolls at once too: a later top-up can come from a different dye lot, and on a woven fiber you will notice it.
