Tissage Mahieu wallpaper is woven cloth, bonded by hand to a nonwoven base so it can go up like paper. The looms stand in Waregem, West Flanders, inside a family business that traces back to 1889 and its founder Gustave Mahieu. Five generations on, the weaving and the lamination still happen in that one Belgian atelier.
Tissage Mahieu weaving: from wide linen looms to the wall
The house started with finely spun pure linen, at first weaving extra-wide cloth for fashion houses and curtains. Around 1950 the brothers Harry and John Mahieu turned that cloth into a wall product, and Xavier Mahieu later carried the name across borders. An unbroken run of weaving is why the surface reads the same from one collection to the next.
Linen, cotton and silk: the fibers in Tissage Mahieu weaves
The brand works with natural woven fibers, linen, cotton and silk, each mounted on a stable nonwoven backing. The weave takes light softly and gives it back changed, so the wall looks one way by daylight and another in the evening. Look for fine lines, quiet relief and the open grain of linen. Seamless weaving keeps the joints between widths from announcing themselves, so the wall behaves as a single surface.
Woven Tissage Mahieu collections to see first
- Textured Tales: sculptural relief for a wall handled as architecture.
- Tartan: the Scottish check, read in a contemporary way.
- Tableau: graphic and expressive, for a wall meant to be looked at.
- Velveteen: a further woven collection in the current Belgian range.
Acoustics and rooms that suit woven textile wallcovering
A woven surface absorbs more sound than smooth wallpaper, which is why it suits rooms with hard floors or a lot of glass, and why hotels, offices and waiting rooms keep specifying it. At home it does its best work behind the bed, around a dining table, or in an entry hall. Compare it against our wider acoustic wallcovering and textile wallcovering ranges, or against the linen wallpaper and beige wallpaper selections.
Hanging, care and ordering Tissage Mahieu wallpaper
The nonwoven back keeps installation straightforward: you paste the wall itself rather than the strip. Measure the repeat before cutting, because a woven textile shows a careless joint. Once it is up, treat it as fabric. Dust it lightly now and then and keep strong cleaners away. Order a sample first, since a screen flattens color and weave. Our team can talk through repeat, quantity and color choice, and we ship to the United States with duties and taxes included.
