V&A Decorative Papers II wallpaper by 1838 wallcoverings

The V&A Decorative Papers II wallpaper by 1838 wallcoverings brings together nine patterns that find their motifs in plants, flowers and other natural forms. The images are drawn flat, with clear colour blocks and distinct contour lines, and repeat continuously across the wall. Within this shared visual language, the patterns vary widely. A small shell motif in blue on white sits alongside a dense composition full of arches, columns and a pineapple. In addition, you'll find floral surfaces in green and yellow and murals with complete landscapes.

Pineapple Garden wallpaper is full of stylised flowers, fans with scale motifs, curls and a green pineapple, alternating with blue arches and columns with ochre-coloured capitals on a cream background. Calico Shell wallpaper, by contrast, keeps to a small scale, with shells in staggered rows that together form a scale pattern. With Rhododendron wallpaper, cream and yellow flower clusters stand above star-shaped leaves, in horizontal bands on dark green. Flower Meadow wallpaper shows a wild flower meadow with bluebells, daisies and dandelions. Garland of Ragini wallpaper and Date Palm wallpaper are murals. The first goes back to an Indian painting, the second shows sand dunes and date palms. Kilburn's Maze wallpaper mixes real and imaginary flowers with other plant forms. Floral Serenade wallpaper is based on a classic upholstery fabric and Laurel Leaf wallpaper carries the laurel leaf in its name.
