Beige wallpaper

Beige wallpaper is having its moment again, and not as the beige of builder-grade apartments. What changed is texture: the same warm neutral that looked flat in flat paint becomes something else entirely in grasscloth, linen weave or a subtly embossed print. This is the color behind most of what gets filed under quiet luxury.

Keeping beige from going bland

Beige fails in exactly one way — when it has no texture and no contrast. The fix is not a different shade; it is a surface with a hand to it, or a pattern held within a single tonal range so the wall has movement without color. A tone-on-tone damask in two beiges does more for a dining room than a bolder color ever will.

Watch the undertone against your floors. A pink-based beige next to red oak turns both orange. Against white oak or a gray-washed floor, the cooler greige beiges hold up; against walnut, go warmer.

Where beige wallpaper belongs

Living rooms and primary bedrooms, where the wall should support the furniture rather than compete with it. It is also the safest choice for an open-plan main floor, because it changes character with the light through the day instead of fighting it. In a small windowless space — a powder room, a closet — beige is usually the wrong call; that is where you want either texture with real depth or a dark color that owns the room.

Rolls run 33 ft long (10.05 m). A 20.5 in wide roll (52 cm) covers about 56 sq ft, roughly the American double roll; the 27.5 in (70 cm) rolls cover closer to 75 sq ft.
