Cork wallpaper

Cork wallpaper is the wallcovering you notice with your hand before your eye: warm, slightly springy, with a grain that never repeats exactly. Thin sheets of cork are shaved from the bark, backed onto paper or non-woven, and left to show what the tree did — burls, veins, the occasional darker seam. On the wall it reads as texture rather than pattern, which is why it works in rooms where a print would shout.

What cork wallcovering does in a room

It absorbs. Not to the degree of a dedicated acoustic wallcovering, but enough that a hard-floored dining room or a home office with a glass desk stops ringing. The surface also takes light softly: where a vinyl or a lacquered paper throws a highlight, cork holds a low sheen that keeps a north-facing room from feeling cold.

Two rooms where it consistently earns its keep: behind a bed, where the warmth and the slight give make a headboard optional, and in a study, where the sound and the natural grain both work in your favor. Cork is comfortable with humidity, so a powder room is fine; a shower surround is not.

Cork wallpaper does not come in the usual long rolls. Most of this collection is supplied in panels of about 39 in × 36 in (100 × 91 cm), hung side by side like tiles, and a number of designs come as a 20 ft roll at 36 in wide (6.20 m × 91 cm). That changes how you order: count the wall area rather than the number of standard rolls, and add a margin, because cork panels are matched by batch and the grain varies between production runs.

Hang with a paste suited to heavy natural coverings and butt the seams — cork does not overlap well. On a wall that will be touched daily, ask about the sealed finishes; several designs are supplied with a protective coating from the mill.
