Dedar fabrics

Dedar fabrics are woven and finished in Italy, then shipped to US addresses with duties and import fees already covered. Elda and Nicola Fabrizio started the house in 1976 in the silk region around Como, and the name shortens design d'arredamento, Italian for home furnishing. Caterina and Raffaele Fabrizio, the second generation, have led the company since 1997.

Buying Dedar fabrics by the meter instead of the yard

Italian mills cut goods by the meter. One running meter is 39.4 in (1 m), roughly nine percent longer than a yard, so a workroom estimate written in yards needs converting before the order goes in. Allow extra for the pattern repeat and for the deep hems American drapery panels usually carry. Send your measurements over and one of our interior specialists checks them before anything is cut.

Where these designs work in an American home

Rooms here often run taller than the European interiors these collections were drawn for. At a 10 ft (3.05 m) window a large repeat shows its full figure, where an 8 ft (2.44 m) drop cuts it in half. Weight counts as well: a lined panel on a long track pulls hard, so anchor the rod into a stud or added blocking rather than drywall alone. Across an open plan, one curtain fabric carried through every opening keeps the sightlines calm, while a powder room or entryway is small enough to take a loud pattern.

Velvets, voiles and graphic weaves

The range covers plenty of ground: deep-pile velvet fabrics that hold their color in low light, sheer voiles that soften a south-facing window, and heavier cloths with a drawn, graphic figure. The mill embroiders, prints with metal and applies sequins, which is where much of the surface interest comes from. For seating in daily use, start with the upholstery fabrics, then set a busy print against a quiet plain fabric so one of the two leads. Composition is listed per design on the product page.

Pairing the collection with wall coverings

Alongside cloth the house makes passementerie and wall coverings, and from 2011 to 2020 it produced the Hermès home textile and wallcovering lines. Color and hand only read properly in your own daylight, so order a sample and leave it in the room for a day, against the floor and the wall it has to live with.
