Harlequin Wallpaper

Harlequin wallpaper is the color-forward member of the Sanderson Design Group, the English family of interior brands that also counts Zoffany, Morris & Co. and Sanderson. Palettes run from fabric-soft neutrals to deep jewel tones, and every design is drawn and painted by hand before it becomes a roll. On the wide drywall surfaces American houses are built from, that depth of color does the work.

Choosing a Harlequin design room by room

An open floor plan leaves few contained walls, so a pattern has to carry a wide surface on its own: a chimney breast, the wall behind a bed, the single entryway wall opposite the front door. A powder room works the other way around: small, windowless, and exactly where a deep jewel tone that would take over a family room is right. These designs handle height too: a repeat that feels heavy under an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling settles once there are 12 ft (3.66 m) above the baseboard.

Botanicals, graphics and texture across the collection

The range splits roughly three ways: botanical drawings with an open, breathing quality, graphic work built on rhythm and depth (see all geometric wallpaper), and textured wallpaper that reads as raffia or woven linen from a few steps back. Colorway matters as much as the drawing: the same design in a chalky neutral and in a saturated ink behaves like two products. Many designs come as non-woven wallpaper, the format American installers prefer: paste goes on the wall, the dry length is smoothed into place, and it lifts away in whole sheets later. Seal the drywall first with primer or wallpaper size, so the paper releases later instead of tearing the face off the board. Bare joint compound drinks paste unevenly. With a long vertical repeat or a heavier texture, we would rather see a professional installer on the job than a free Saturday; a stairwell punishes an uneven first drop.

Harlequin wallpaper is sold by the European roll: 33 ft (10.05 m) long and 20.9 in (53 cm) wide, so one roll covers close to an American double roll and your roll count comes out lower.
