Historical wallpaper

Historical wallpaper is inspired by wall coverings from earlier periods and features patterns and motifs that reference classical interiors, palaces, and monumental buildings. Think ornamentation, symmetry, and repetitive designs that originate from various historical movements. Historical wallpaper is used to give a room a clear nod to the past without sacrificing its decorative character.

Historical wallpaper carries a room that new construction cannot: block-printed damasks, chinoiserie panels, William Morris repeats that were drawn by hand before anyone thought of a printing cylinder. These are archive documents, reissued by the mills that still hold the original drawings — which is why a Victorian parlor and a plain drywall box can both wear them well.

Where historical wallpaper earns its place

Formal rooms are the obvious home: a dining room, a study, a stair hall you see from the entry. But the pattern often works hardest in the least formal space in the house. A powder room papered floor to ceiling in a dark archive print reads as a deliberate choice, not a compromise, and small rooms forgive a large repeat better than people expect.

In an older home, match the era loosely rather than exactly. A 1920s house does not need a 1920s paper; it needs a paper whose scale suits the moldings and the ceiling height.

Roll sizes in feet and inches

Rolls here run 33 ft long (10.05 m) in the classic European widths of 20.5 in and 21 in (52 and 53 cm), with a number of designs at 27.5 in (70 cm). A 20.5 in roll covers roughly 56 sq ft — close to a standard American double roll — while the wider rolls cover about 75 sq ft and leave fewer seams on the wall.

Most of these designs are printed on non-woven backing, which hangs paste-the-wall and strips dry later. A handful of the true archive reissues are still printed on paper stock; those want paste on the paper and a few minutes of soaking time. The product page states which is which.

The archives behind these designs

Morris & Co reprints from the original nineteenth-century blocks, and Cole & Son holds one of the largest historic archives in the trade. Liberty draws on its own textile library, Sandberg on Swedish manor-house painting, and Mulberry and House of Hackney reinterpret period patterns in modern colorways. Pierre Frey and Thibaut round out the field.

If the archive look appeals but the pattern feels heavy, floral wallpaper and botanical wallpaper sit lighter, while architecture wallpaper keeps the period feel in line and structure.

Ordering historical wallpaper from the US

Order samples before you commit. Archive colors are mixed to period recipes, so a green can carry more ochre than a screen suggests, and gilded grounds shift completely depending on whether your light comes from the north or the south.

Duties and taxes are included in the price shown, so nothing is collected at your door. Orders ship insured from the Netherlands; availability and lead time are listed on each product page, since several archive designs are printed to order at the mill.
