House of Hackney fabrics

House of Hackney fabrics are made for rooms where a plain sofa was never the plan. The drawing comes first: dense botanicals in saturated color, Victorian ornament underneath, printed at a scale that settles a room instead of decorating it. Where House of Hackney fabrics work in an American home

A powder room with a Roman shade in a large-scale palm print reads as a decision, and nobody lingers long enough to tire of it. A breakfast nook banquette in a darker botanical hides a lot of daily life. In a primary bedroom they work best at the window and on a headboard, behind you rather than facing you.

Cushions and small accents

Palmeral, stripes and the William Morris prints

Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle set the brand up in London in 2011 and named it after Hackney, the East London district. Palmeral is the signature print in this line: an explosion of palm leaves. The name reaches back to Loddiges, a Georgian-era glasshouse that stood in Hackney and ranked among the largest palm houses anywhere. Camelot Stripe answers it in a straight repeat, a classic stripe carrying modern color, and the easiest thing to set beside a big botanical without the two fighting, close to our striped fabrics. The brand has also gone back into the William Morris archive: Compton and Foliage return in new colorways and at a different scale, with a cotton velvet woven in England among them, cousins of our Morris & Co fabrics. Made to order: planning yardage

House of Hackney is a certified B Corp, and keeps production at home and to order where it can, to limit waste; organic cotton and recycled fibers run through the range. Many of these designs are cut once you order them, so quantity and repeat want settling first. Order a sample, live with it a day, then step back six feet (1.83 m): a motif that felt loud in the hand calms down at room distance.
