Murate wallpaper collection Nobilis

Murate wallpaper by Nobilis: velvet with a worn appearance

Murate wallpaper by Nobilis looks like a wall that has been around for years. It belongs to the Matieres Precieuses wallpaper collection and draws its inspiration from seventeenth-century velvet wall coverings. You see no pattern, only texture: fine vertical stripes and small slubs, with a subtle horizontal weave. Light and dark zones blend into one another like clouds, as if the velvet has worn away in places. This makes the wall change with the light. Where light falls at an angle, the surface gains depth and a soft sheen.

The pattern in the Murate wallpaper collection

This collection revolves around one pattern: Murate wallpaper. In the mood photo you see it in terracotta to rust red, with glowing orange patches and deeper reddish-brown in the dark areas. The texture is small in scale and runs continuously over the wall, without a visible repeat. Up close it resembles a woven fabric like raw silk or shantung. From a distance it becomes a mottled colour field that is never completely even. It is precisely this unevenness in the colour that makes it more than a plain background. The worn effect gives the wall a lived-in quality, as if it had always hung there.

Combining Nobilis wallpaper with gold and dark wood

In the photo, a gilded, baroque-style carved mirror frame with acanthus leaves hangs on the rust-red wall. The gold and the terracotta enhance each other. Below it stands a dark wooden sideboard with a metal trim, topped by a white mushroom-shaped lamp. This contrast shows that Murate by Nobilis works with both historical and modern pieces. A lamp shining along the wall at an angle brings out the sheen and the stripes in the velvet.
