Romo cushions are made from the furnishing fabrics of an English family firm that has existed since 1902. Robert Mould founded the firm in Nottingham; the first two letters of his first name gave it the name Romo. The fifth generation runs it today from Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, and the fabrics come out of the same studio as the Romo wallpaper range.

From furniture maker to English fabric house

Romo began by making furniture and spent decades as a wholesaler to that trade. The turn came in the 1980s, when it opened its own design studio. Fabric, wallpaper, trimmings and accessories all follow from that decision, and the firm won the Queen's Award for Enterprise twice for its international success.

Velvet, woven relief and washed plain cushions

What registers first is the hand of the cloth. Velvets hold deep shifts of color as light travels across the pile; woven designs sit in relief, so the pattern reads by touch; the plains are finished soft, close to peach skin. Palettes are built as families rather than single shades, so one cover recedes on a neutral sofa while the next holds a corner. The same runs through our velvet fabrics and plain cushions.

Named collections behind the Romo cushions: Pluma, Linara and Katori

Pluma is the decorative end: Odelia and Ezri put print together with chenille and a contrasting piped edge, and Pluma Wallcoverings carries that onto the wall. Linara sits at the other pole: a linen blend you can wash, softened to an antique look, in a color range wide enough for most rooms. Katori comes out of the Itami collection with a chevron stripe, at home among our striped cushions.

Combining cushion covers with wallpaper and curtains

Because one house makes the fabric, the paper and the trimming, a cover can be matched to what is already on the wall. Pair a plain velvet with a woven design so the contrast lives in the texture, or stay inside one color family and let a few tones do the work. From an empty room, start with the wider luxury cushions selection and work back.

Care and cleaning of Romo cushion covers

Plump them back into shape now and then, keep them out of long hours of direct sun so the colors hold, and check the care label before cleaning: the method depends on the cloth. A removable cover makes that simpler, as it does for anything sewn from our cushion fabrics.
