Tropical wallpaper

Tropical wallpaper turns a wall into a garden that never needs watering: broad palm fronds, banana leaves, birds of paradise, the occasional macaw hiding in the canopy. The greens carry the room — deep jade through fresh fern — usually lifted with terracotta, ochre, coral or a deep ink blue. Warm rather than loud, which is why it settles as easily into a Manhattan powder room as into a Florida sunroom.

Where tropical wallpaper works in an American home

One wall usually beats four. The wall behind the bed, the stretch of entryway you see from the front door, the run above a dining table — those carry the pattern without crowding the room. Powder rooms are the happy exception: go floor to ceiling and let the enclosed feeling do the work. In an open-plan main floor, a single papered wall marks off the dining area without adding a partition, and the leaf shapes read well from a distance.

North-facing rooms take the darker jungle grounds surprisingly well; the pattern keeps its depth when the light is flat. In bright southern light, the paler palm and fern designs hold up better and won't go glossy on you.

Roll sizes in feet and inches

These are European rolls, so the numbers look different from what you may be used to. Nearly every roll here runs 33 ft long (10.05 m). Widths vary by mill: 20.5 in (52 cm) and 21 in (53 cm) are the classic European widths, while a good part of this collection comes in 27.5 in (70 cm) or 39 in (100 cm).

What that means in practice: a 20.5 in roll covers roughly 56 sq ft — right about the same as a standard American double roll. The wider 27.5 in rolls cover closer to 75 sq ft each, so you often need fewer of them, with fewer seams on the wall. Murals and panel sets are sold as a set sized to your wall, not by the roll; the product page lists the exact panel height and total width.
