Voysey House Wallpaper

Voysey House wallpaper is named after a building. In 1902, C.F.A. Voysey designed an extension to Sanderson's wallpaper factory in Chiswick: white glazed brick with dark banding, his only commercial building, today a Grade II* listed landmark. More than a century later the studio returned to it, and this collection was drawn in that very building. Hence the date in the brand mark.

The history behind Voysey House wallpaper

Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941) was already drawing wallpapers for Sanderson in the 1880s, long before he designed their factory. But he was an architect first — white facades, low roof lines, broad chimneys — and that eye explains his designs. Where his contemporaries filled a pattern to the very last inch, Voysey left air between the motifs and built a repeat the way he built an elevation: rhythm, proportion, a clear line. His birds, trees and stylised flowers also carry a dry wit that is rare in the nineteenth century: a snake curling around a tulip, doves crossing in formation. Volume I draws on that archive and gives the drawings the scale he could never print himself.

The designs are digitally printed on a matt, faintly textile-like ground, so the lines stay crisp while the wall keeps something tactile; on several designs that ground is a papyrus-like paper with a rougher, organic texture. The palette falls into two families. On one side the quiet colourways — Vellum, Natural, Seafoam, Pistachio — where the motif reads as texture rather than print. On the other the metallics in Antique Gold and Mirror Gold, where the drawing catches raking light and holds back for the rest of the day. Between them sits a run of deeper tones such as Indigo, Peacock and Bronzed Walnut, for rooms you would rather draw closed.

Where does Voysey House wallpaper work best?

The graphic structure makes this wallpaper surprisingly well suited to a modern interior: against plain white walls or a restrained kitchen, a design such as Snake Tulip or Voysey's Damask reads as a drawing on the wall rather than as decor. The large-scale designs ask for a surface you can take in at a glance — a dining room, a stair landing, the wall behind the bed — and are strongest there on a single wall. The quieter designs with a short repeat, such as Birds Grape and Squire's Topiary, can go all the way round; from a distance they read almost as a weave.
