Nobilis Wallpaper

Nobilis wallpaper arrives in the United States from Paris, and it behaves a little differently here than in a European apartment. American rooms are mostly drywall rather than plaster, ceilings of 9 or 10 ft (2.74 or 3.05 m) are normal, and an open floor plan means one pattern gets read from several rooms at once.

Measuring a wall for Nobilis wallpaper in a US home

Because this is a French range, the roll count is worth settling before anything is ordered. Each design carries its own roll length, roll width and pattern repeat on the product page, and those are the figures to count with. Measure the wall at its tallest point rather than at the doorway, and treat a door or a window as full wall instead of deducting it, which leaves room for trimming. Send the measurements to us and we will go through the count with you, and say so plainly if a wall would be better served by another design.

Rooms in an American home where these designs work

A powder room is the easiest place to begin: small, enclosed, and a room that can carry a bold pattern without the rest of the house having to agree. In an entry hall or up a stairwell the lavish botanical prints hold a tall wall, where a small motif would vanish. The graphic and geometric designs suit a home office, or a hallway that has to carry character on its own. With an open plan, keep the pattern to the wall behind the dining table or the fireplace, so it reads as one deliberate surface.

Nobilis textures, backings and daily wear

Part of the range is printed and richly colored; another part is about surface, with sisal texture and the grain of cork. Much of this line is produced on non-woven or vinyl and is washable, which matters on a hallway wall that gets touched. Texture is the one thing a screen cannot show, so order a sample first.

Which collections to open first

The house publishes in collections rather than one long catalog. Six starting points from the 112 designs we carry:

• Stella wallpaper collection Nobilis — graphic designs with organic forms in a calm color palette, seven designs.
• Linaza wallpaper collection Nobilis — plain linen textures with a matte finish that gain depth in raking light.
• Panorama wallpaper collection Nobilis, twelve designs
• Grand Angle wallpaper collection Nobilis, eleven designs
• Archipelago wallpaper collection Nobilis, seven designs
• Les Bois Essentials wallpaper collection Nobilis, seven designs
• Cosmopolitan N3 wallpaper collection Nobilis, seven designs
• Fine Sisal N°2 wallpaper collection Nobilis, the sisal texture in one design

Ordering Nobilis wallpaper from Europe to a US address

Nobilis has published from Paris since 1928 and is run today by Norman Halard.
